We populate a sphere full of culture and tradition. In some geographies the fear of the omnipresent is over stated and I happen to live in just such a land. A land of 3,60,003 Gods as Aravind Adiga so candidly points out in his novel "The White Tiger". Religious sentiments set aside, personally the concept of religion and superstition are the same for me. It is quiet difficult to understand if India is a land of Superstition or Religion!!
When one is superstitious he believes in blindly following certain customs to ward off the unmentionable. If you sneeze before starting out of the house its bad luck, if a cat crosses your path things will go amiss, its a good omen to spill boiled milk in a new house yada yada yada....if you carefully notice then the practices in religion are also very similar. A visit to the mandir is mandatory if a new vehicle is bought, Church is an obligation every sunday, We must join our hands in prayer, We must bow in humility, Cover our heads in a religious place etc. I mean who laid all these rules down? or shall i say who laid all these superstitions down?
If i believe in praying standing upside down naked in the confines of my comfortable bed, and doing this i can medidate and get peace then whats the harm? Why is it so important to be a part of a society who would not in anycase survive without the gossip i create!! ;) hence i would say tht after 26 years of existence in this world i have grown up to beleive that religion is nothing but moral policing. We as human beings are vile creatures(robbers) and always require the fear of somebody(cops) to live our life in discpline and that somebody has become religion.
My religion is honesty and happiness, if you can lead a life of honesty bringing hapiness to all around you are a good human being and if God exists she oopss he (another superstition) will be happy that you created your own religion.
Happiness and Honesty till the fingers tap the keyboard again.
